Frequently Asked Questions

Good Questions. Straight Answers.

Not all window films are the same, and it's common to wonder which one fits your situation. Films serve distinct purposes: reducing glare, increasing energy efficiency, protecting glass from graffiti, adding privacy and security. Here are the questions we hear most, answered plainly. If yours isn't here, just ask us. We like the tough ones.

Performance & Protection

It depends on the film, which is exactly why we carry a range. Our premium solar films reject up to 79% of total solar energy, and every architectural film we install blocks up to 99% of harmful UV rays. Glare reduction runs as high as 93% on our most reflective films. During your free consultation we'll match the film's performance numbers to your windows, your sun exposure, and your goals, so you get the protection you need without paying for performance you don't.

SPF is a sunscreen measurement, so there's no official SPF rating for glass, but here's the practical translation: our films block up to 99% of ultraviolet rays, meaning only about 1% of the UV that hits your window gets through. That's protection on par with a very high SPF sunscreen, permanently applied to your glass, and it's why UV-blocking window film is recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation as part of a comprehensive sun protection program. Your skin, your furniture, your flooring, and your artwork all get the same defense.

No. Our Johnson Window Films are made from the most optically clear polyester film available and finished with a scratch-resistant hardcoat, so a properly installed film gives you a crisp, undistorted view. In fact, by cutting glare, most customers find they see better through their windows than before.

One honest note: during the first 30 to 60 days after installation, you may notice slight haziness or small water pockets as the mounting moisture naturally evaporates. That's a normal part of the curing process, not a defect, and it clears on its own.

Not ours. That purple, bubbling film you've seen on old car windows and storefronts is cheap dyed film, the kind that degrades in a few years, and it's precisely what we don't install. Johnson Window Films use sputtered metal and ceramic constructions that are guaranteed not to fade or change color, bonded with superior adhesives that won't peel, bubble, or delaminate from heat or age, even through decades of Arizona summers. Every installation is backed by comprehensive manufacturer warranties, honored because we're an authorized Johnson dealer.

Because it's working. Ceramic film absorbs solar energy at the glass surface instead of letting it pass through into your room. That captured energy warms the glass, sometimes to 115-120°F on a sunny day, while everything behind it stays cool. Without film, the glass stays cooler because all that energy is flowing straight through it and heating your furniture, floors, and air instead. Hot glass, cool room: that's the trade you want. You can read the full explanation on our Benefits of Window Films page.

Only if you want it to. Films come in a full range of visible light transmission levels, from nearly clear safety films to deep privacy shades, and modern films are spectrally selective: they target invisible infrared heat and UV while letting visible light through. Most customers keep abundant natural light and lose only the heat and glare. We'll show you samples on your actual windows so you can see exactly how each shade looks before deciding.

Here's the straight answer most companies mumble: no. Reflective film's one-way privacy works when it's brighter outside than inside, which is why it's excellent daytime privacy. After dark, with your interior lights on, the effect reverses and people outside can see in. If nighttime privacy matters, the solution is film for daytime plus blinds or drapes for evening, or a frosted decorative film for spaces like bathrooms where around-the-clock privacy is the whole point. We'll tell you which honestly, because a customer surprised at 9pm is not a happy customer.

Working With Us

We serve the greater Phoenix area: Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Tempe, Scottsdale, Phoenix, and surrounding communities. Our professional mobile service brings the installation to you, fully equipped with premium materials, whether it's a home in Gilbert, a storefront in downtown Chandler, or an office building in Tempe. Not sure if you're in range? Call us at (623) 272-8654 and ask. The answer is usually yes.

Not at this time. Our specialty is architectural window film for homes and commercial buildings: solar control, safety and security, and anti-graffiti films. If it's on a building, we're your team. If it's on wheels, we're not the right fit just yet.

Most residential installations are completed in 3 to 4 hours. Commercial projects are scheduled around your operations to keep disruption to a minimum. Our installers use only filtered water and gentle soap solutions, wear dedicated in-house shoes, carefully move and replace furniture and window treatments, and leave everything spotless. The film is functional immediately and reaches full optical clarity within 30 to 60 days as it cures.

In most cases, yes, but this is exactly where professional assessment earns its keep. Several of our films, including Johnson DaylightNatural and ScenicView, are specifically engineered to be dual-pane safe and compatible with low-E glass. The wrong film on the wrong glass can cause thermal stress, which is one of the risks of DIY film and bargain installers. We assess your glass type before recommending anything, so the film and the window are always a safe match, and your glass warranty stays intact.

Yes, and in Arizona the math is friendlier than almost anywhere else. Windows are the biggest source of heat gain in most buildings, and our films reject the majority of that heat before it gets in. Many customers see 20-30% reductions in cooling costs. For commercial buildings, installations often pay for themselves within about two years through energy savings alone, and every month after that is money staying in your pocket. Film also eases the workload on your air conditioner, which extends its life, a savings nobody puts on the brochure but every HVAC bill reflects.

You can buy DIY film, and we'll be honest: for a shed window, go for it. But there are three reasons professional installation matters for anything you care about. First, film selection: matching film to glass type, exposure, and purpose is where most DIY projects go wrong before the box is even open. Second, technique: bubble-free, dirt-free, precisely trimmed application takes training and the right tools. Third, and biggest: manufacturer warranties require installation by authorized dealers. A DIY install saves a little now and gives up decades of warranty protection, which is a poor trade on a product designed to last that long.

Wait about 30 days after installation to let the film fully cure, then clean as usual with one adjustment: use a soft cloth or rubber squeegee with mild soap and water or a standard glass cleaner, and skip abrasive pads, scouring powders, and anything gritty. The CST scratch-resistant hardcoat on our films is tough and makes routine cleaning simple, but abrasives are the one enemy of any coated surface. Treated kindly, the film will look the way it did on day one for decades.
